Betas of Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0 Now Available

Nokia today released beta versions of Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0. Both are now available for download, testing and feedback from the official Qt website qt.nokia.com.

A major feature in the Qt 4.7 beta release is a beta version of Qt Quick, the new high-level UI technology that enables developers and designers to work together to create animated, touch enabled UIs.

In addition, the Qt 4.7 beta includes an update of the Qt WebKit Integration and further progress on planned performance and quality process improvements for Qt.

Qt Quick
Qt Quick is a high-level user interface technology that makes it easy to create animated, touch-enabled UIs and lightweight applications for mobile and embedded devices. Three new technologies come together to form the Qt Quick UI creation kit. An enhanced Qt Creator IDE, a new easy-to-learn language (QML) and a new module in the Qt library called QtDeclarative combine to make Qt easier to use for developers and designers who are not conversant in C++.  Find out more about Qt Quick.

Qt WebKit update
Qt 4.7 includes an update that creates greater stability and performance of the Qt WebKit Integration.

Improved performance and quality
With the Qt 4.7 and Qt Creator 2.0 releases, changes are being introduced to the Qt development infrastructure and ways of working to ensure that each Qt release is faster and of better quality:

  • The Qt 4.7 release will be the first Qt release controlled by the Qt Continuous Integration System, which controls the process of merging changes into Qt, preventing new errors and increasing quality and stability.

  • A new performance team has been created within Qt development, tasked with creating a set of benchmarks to stop changes that cause performance regressions in Qt.

Qt Creator 2.0 Beta
The Qt Creator 2.0 beta includes previews of new functionality for easily creating applications with Qt Quick. Specifically, an early preview of Quick Designer (a WYSIWYG editor to lay out application UI) is included, as well as support in the code editor and debugger for Qt Quick code (QML).

The Quick Designer will be included as a technology preview in the final release version of Qt Creator 2.0.
