C2 Microsystems builds innovative Internet TV platform using Qt

Qt developers can now port their multi-media and web applications to TVs using C2 Microsystems’ Qt based SDK

22 October 2009 – Oslo, Norway – Nokia today advised that C2 Microsystems (www.c2micro.com) has selected the Qt framework to build an innovative Internet TV platform called ConnectedTV. Sold to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the television industry, ConnectedTV can now provide device makers with the full ecosystem of Qt developers and the advantages of Qt's rapid, cross-platform user interface (UI) development capabilities.

The ConnectedTV platform includes a network media player and personal video recorder (PVR) as well as home surveillance and videophone applications. It has also build-in multiple Internet media and information services. The platform uses C2 Microsystems' chipset, an innovative and powerful architecture combining the advantages of both ASIC and DSP, providing PC-like multimedia capability with full high definition decoding, encoding and transcoding a wide variety of media content types.

C2 Microsystems is also using Qt as the basis of its software development kit (SDK) environment which is open for its customer and third party application vendors. Customers can customize all UIs to implement their product design and third party application vendors can use Qt and the UI controls to develop applications on the C2Micro Connected TV platform.

"The open source business model that Nokia deploys for Qt fits C2 Microsystems and our customers perfectly. Qt's rich and very mature UI framework has enabled us to develop a very advanced UI for our ConnectedTV platform, including the straightforward development of rich multimedia functions like PVR.  We see the mutual benefit of working with the Qt developer community and Qt partners to encourage the creation of multiple applications to enhance our platform. Therefore we plan to use Qt for the next generation of our Connected TV development and contribute our modifications and enhancements back into Qt," said Dr Gene Liu, CEO and President,  at C2 Microsystems.

“There is a strong interest in using Qt for creating great user experiences for consumer electronics. The ConnectTV platform is a great example of how to enrich the next generation of emerging web connected devices as well as a great example of the level of innovation can be achieved by using Qt,” said Daniel Kihlberg, Director, Global Sales, Marketing and Services at Qt Development Frameworks, Nokia. “It is exciting to know that Qt developers will be able to address yet another market, by deploying or creating new applications for this platform..”
