Counting charter members such as BMW, General Motors and Intel, and core members including NEC, Wipro Technologies and Mitsubishi Electric, the GENIVI Alliance heralds a new era of cooperation among automakers, suppliers and technology providers looking to streamline the development and support of in-vehicle infotainment products and services.

A reusable, open source IVI platform will deliver benefits including faster speed to market, dramatic reductions in production costs and increased options for integrating and customizing solutions.

Timo Ali-Vehmas, vice president, Compatibility & Industry Collaboration, Nokia, commented on the recent announcement. "People now have their mobile devices with them wherever they are. They want to be able to make calls, as well as listen to music and find their way around, enabled by services such as Ovi from Nokia, anywhere,”

“Seamless integration of mobile devices to car infotainment systems is an increasingly important part of satisfying these needs. Nokia is excited to join GENIVI to be part of shaping the future in-vehicle infotainment specifications.”

Ali-Vehmas continued, “Nokia will contribute extensive experience in standardization and creating open specifications, and expect GENIVI work to result in quicker time-to market and reduced costs for car infotainment related product development."

Qt is an ideal application and UI framework for OEMs and Tier1s working with GENIVI’s  open-source Linux-based environment, and demonstrations of GENIVI Alliance solutions based on Qt are expected in 2010.
