Smart Installer for Symbian Beta 2 Released
An updated beta version of the Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian has been released today.
The update contains significant progress from the beta that was released in February, and is a large step towards achieving the program’s end goal of allowing users with existing Symbian/S60 devices to seamlessly install and run Qt applications.
The Smart Installer works by automatically checking, downloading and installing required Qt libraries over the air as part of an application install.
It targets Symbian S60 3rd Edition FP1, FP2 and 5th Edition devices, opening up tens of millions of additional devices that Qt developers can target with their applications.
Some of Nokia’s most popular devices such as the N97, 5800XM and E72 will be able to be targeted by Qt developers once the Smart Installer is launched.
The Smart Installer is scheduled for final release around mid 2010. The technology behind the Smart Installer is being contributed to the Symbian Foundation.
