What's Coming in Qt 4.6?

 

Qt 4.6 extends Qt and introduces a range of new features and optimizations, allowing developers to:

Create more exciting user experiences

Qt 4.6 will make it possible to develop modern, advanced UIs on desktops, embedded and mobile devices.  New features include:

  • Advanced graphics effects like opacity, drop-shadows, glow and filtering
  • A new animation framework
  • Gesture-based and multi-touch input methods



Deliver the best possible performance

With version 4.6, Qt-based applications will now run faster and more smoothly.  Key improvements include:

  • Performance improvements to key areas of Qt including: a rewrite of the Qt Graphics View rendering algorithm, resource optimization and a new OpenGL paint engine for 3D graphics rendering
  • The Qt WebKit Integration has been extended with an API to access and modify the contents (DOM) of Web pages being browsed, as well as performance improvements and a new JavaScriptCore based backend for QtScript
  • New support for hardware-accelerated 2D vector graphics using OpenVG
  • Improved support for DirectFB

Target new platforms

Version 4.6 will bring Qt to new platforms, extending the reach of Qt-based applications to more users.  New platforms include:

  • New Qt port to the Symbian Platform (Read more)
  • Support for Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6
  • Extended support for UNIX platforms, including Solaris 10, HP-UX and AIX 6

The Qt port to the Symbian Platform with integration for the S60 framework has now been merged in to the mainline Qt 4.6 branch. After the Qt 4.6 Tech Preview, the focus for the Beta and Release Candidate has been to stabilize the Symbian port. Read more...
