CS Wave
Qt simplified the GUI development for a virtual
reality training application.
CS WAVE is a virtual welding environment dedicated to welding training.
It does not replace existing trainings. It brings a pedagogical improvement through
the optimisation of the gesture learning and the concentration requested from
the forthcoming welders.
It simulates welding situations through a wide range of exercises. Trainer/Trainees architecture provides a simultaneous control of the training process for several trainees. Predefined and configurable scenario allow the trainer to optimise the training by providing scheduling, evolution control and gesture quality evaluation.
The Challenge
To develop the first ever virtual reality training system for welders, CS WAVE needed a design that would be easy for trainees to use but would have rich features that would enable them to acquire the sensory and motor skills to operate welding equipment. The application needed to be available on multiple platforms.
The Solution
Qt made it possible to design an easy-to-use graphical user interface for WAVE’s training workbench, which is used to simulate various aspects of the welding process. The new solution helps to enhance educational support, especially during the first few weeks of training when students can waste huge amounts of welding materials trying to learn the right technique. The application works across a number of operating system platforms, including Windows, Linux and IRIX.
The Value
The Qt application developer framework increased developer productivity, making it possible to bring the product to market faster. Additionally, Qt framework contributed to customer satisfaction by making it possible for the development team to provide a user-friendly GUI and an effective simulation environment for welder training.
“Many aspects of the Workbench GUI – for example the full screen and 3D windows – would not have been as easy to develop with other solutions.” Laurent DaDalto, Project Manager,CS WAVE
