Samsung SRD-16700The Challenge

Samsung was looking to create a more intuitive and richer GUI for its SRD-16700 DVR (Digital Video Recorder) for CCTV to enable users to get the most out of its expanded range of features. Keen to move away from text based GUIs commonly found in this product sector, Samsung wanted to build a device that would uphold its reputation for excellence established over 30 years in the field of optical and imaging technologies. With web-based monitoring & search capabilities, the SRD-16700 needed to offer a PC-like GUI with mouse support so that this advanced piece of surveillance equipment could be easily operated by users unfamiliar with this type of device.

The Solution

Samsung analyzed its GUI design and development needs and settled on a conscious decision to utilize a complete application framework to underpin a raw build of it new product’s interface. The company knew that Qt’s popularity was in many regards due to its ease of use and extensive set of features. But at the time of starting this GUI build project, Samsung knew that its development team had no previous Qt experience. This reality meant that the company had to place its faith in Qt’s ability to provide extensive supporting documentation and sample code; aspects that the company identified as being prevalent in the Qt Assistant online documentation tool.

The engineers and designers on the SRD-16700 development team were immediately drawn to Qt’s Open Source community and the resources and knowledge pool that this has engendered. After gaining a grasp of Qt programming fundamentals online, the team was able to absorb a deeper amount of technical knowledge from their formal technical training, which was carried out by Qt Development Frameworks staff themselves.

The Value

Samsung developers found Qt Assistant among the most valuable benefits during their GUI development period and this was largely down to the comprehensive documentation and sample code that this tool provides. The company also found the qmake project-oriented build process system to be an invaluable tool in terms of its ability to ease the development effort, as it eliminated the need to write makefiles by hand.

The Qt Creator Integrated Development environment (IDE) and Qt Linguist translation and localization tools were used as well so that the PC-like GUI became a reality for Samsung’s DVR for CCTV device. In summary, Qt provided Samsung with an easy route to its first steps on this particular GUI development road, as well as a rich and powerful set of resources for its developers to benefit from once they were up and running.
