Samsung SPF-105V

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technology with 2007 consolidated sales of US$103.4 billion. Employing approximately 150,000 people in 134 offices in 62 countries, the company consists of five main business units: Digital Media Business, LCD Business, Semiconductor Business, Telecommunication Business and Digital Appliance Business. Recognized as one of the fastest growing global brands, Samsung Electronics is a leading producer of digital TVs, memory chips, mobile phones and TFT-LCDs.

The Challenge
Samsung was looking to develop a Web-enabled digital photo frame, the SPF-105V, with the ability to provide dynamic information to a variety of users on a daily basis. Not only did Samsung want the SPF-105V to be feature packed digital photo frame, but it also wanted the device to cater to a varied age group such as teenagers favoring digital music or business persons interested in current stock prices or up-to-date weather around the world. The SPF-105V was to surpass the traditional digital photo frame and connect people by enabling photo, video and music sharing.

The Solution
Samsung embarked on a full-scale search for a GUI framework/application framework and concluded on developing the SPF-105V with Qt. The company felt that Qt’s stable history in the application framework field provided a trustworthy and technologically sound choice. At the same time, a critical factor for Samsung was a GUI and application framework that had a short learning curve and extensive documentation and support.  Qt’s GUI and Network  module, thread support along with Qt Linguist proved to be prominent technologies which offered Samsung developers advantageous ease of use and a global reach with decreased time in localization development.

The SPF-105V development team made good use of Qt’s Open Source Community gaining a basic foundation in Qt programming before attending official Qt training. It also used the open source UPNP technology as a third party technology in addition to Qt’s technology. After three days of official Qt training, the seven-person Qt development teamwere able to start productive development.

The Value
Although the Samsung seven-person development team faced the challenge of learning a new technology with Qt, the team was able to complete development of the SPF-105V in 4-5months. Qt’s extensive open source community helped the developers learn Qt quicker getting the product to market on schedule.

Using Qt technology resulted in a simplified development process for the SPF-105V development team. The Qt platform is able to support project concepts and makes it easy to separate project specific code from each other.
