Synopsys
Qt enabled Synopsys to write a single source and port it to various popular platforms expanding share in the electronic design automation software area.
Synopsys, Inc. is a world leader in delivering
semiconductor design software, intellectual property (IP), design for
manufacturing (DFM) solutions and professional services that companies
use to design systems-on-chips (SoCs) and electronic systems. The
company's products enable semiconductor, manufacturing, computer,
communications, consumer electronics and other companies that develop
electronic products to improve performance, increase productivity and
achieve predictable success from systems to silicon.
The Challenge
Synopsys needed to rewrite
its GUI and make its products available on a variety of new platforms.
Originally written for UNIX, the EDA applications needed to run on Microsoft
Windows and Linux. The resulting product had to be easy to use so that
customers could use the software right out of the box, without having to deal
with complex set up or changes to their existing environments.
The Solution
Qt enabled Synopsys developers to write a single source, port it to a variety
of platforms with a simple recompile and have it run as a native application
with no emulation layers or virtual machines.
The Value
Qt helped expand the Synopsys market reach by enabling it to offer its product
on popular platforms. Additionally, its newly designed easy-to-use GUI
increased customer satisfaction.
“Qt is object-oriented the way C++ is supposed to be object-oriented. It
helped our developers become productive quickly and helped them develop reusable
code. After we created a software framework for user interfaces with Qt, every
time we turned around it seemed like some new group had grabbed the framework
and was using it to build their software.” Eric Solomon, Group
Research and Development Director, Synopsys
