Qt Windowless Flash NPAPI Demonstration

The Challenge

Provide high quality web video playback, including streamed HD video, using standard software running on mass-market "connected TV" hardware.

The Building Blocks

Hardware	The demo hardware is based on the Nexperia NXP STB225 development kit, including development board and multi-format HD source decoder (H264/VC-1/MPEG-2.) The reference design targets cost-sensitive projects.
OS	NXP Linux distribution (2.6 kernel)
APIs and Frameworks	Qt 4.6 using Qt WebKit to display standard web sites for online video (HTML, NPAPI Flash plugin), Qt DirectFB for hardware acceleration of graphics and video rendering, and Adobe Stagecraft 1.2+ (Flash Lite player that plugs into Qt WebKit browser engine via NPAPI).

The Solution

Qt WebKit support for "windowless" Flash NPAPI plug-in is already supported in Qt/X11. This was extended to support DirectFB hardware acceleration (without X11).
Adobe Stagecraft NPAPI plug-in was provided by Adobe, along with patches to support "windowless" mode.
Nexperia provided the DirectFB driver changes needed to support the integration.

The Results

Great viewing of video streamed to TV from portals like Youtube.com, including the Youtube.com/XL portal specifically designed for HD video.
Familiar web user experience.
Patches to Qt WebKit are in the process of being contributed to Webkit.org.
Proof-of-concept of a standard web architecture for delivering online HD video on mass-market set-top-boxes and TVs using Qt.
